My heart is with every therapist who is navigating these challenging times.
One of the practices that helps me is looking over the treatment goals for my clients near the beginning of each new year. My EHR (electronic health record) makes this simple because I have a template form for a brief treatment review.
This review takes me 10-15 minutes per client and helps me focus on how to help my client for the coming year.
Four years ago, I went through my own family and mental health challenges.
These challenges impacted my work as a therapist. I thought carefully about each client and assessed the care I was able to give. Through this practice, it became clear to me that I had to refer three of my most acute patients. I spent a year and extensive planning talking about each of these clients in consultation and planning for termination.
Because I cared a great deal for these clients, I wanted to find a referral that would best suit their treatment goals. Each of these clients landed with excellent therapists who could move their treatment forward.
These decisions are incredibly difficult and I’m thankful I didn’t have to navigate them alone.
If you are working toward being intentional around treatment planning for your clients, I am here to guide you through this practice.
